Disarmament and Security Committee (DISEC) – old

The United Nations (UN) Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) was created as the first of the main committees in the General Assembly when the charter of the United Nations was signed in 1945. Thus, DISEC is often referred to as the First Committee. DISEC was formed to respond to the need for an international forum to discuss issues of peace and security among members of the international community. According to the UN Charter, the purpose of DISEC in the General Assembly is to establish ‘general principles of cooperation in the maintenance of international peace and security, including the principles governing disarmament and the regulation of armaments’ and also to give ‘recommendations with regard to such principles to the members or to the Security Council.’ Although DISEC cannot directly advise the decision-making process of the Security Council, the fourth chapter of the UN Charter explains that DISEC can suggest specific topics for Security Council consideration.

Dear Delegates,

I am honored to be your Co-Chair and am extremely pleased to welcome you to the DISEC, a committee that aims to discuss key issues that the world faces today.

I study Developmental Politics and Economics at Ashoka University, Sonipat, implying that I am the most heavily invested in the future of my country. A fun fact about me is that I am a vegan Jain and take strict measures to adhere to my diet.

Delegates, the committee is dynamic and holistic in nature and requires your expertise to shape the future; it’s your responsibility to act immediately in order to preserve the purpose of rules, laws and conventions because the rate of change and disruption possess the power to make all existing laws obsolete which will lead to a ruckus at a global stage which will be an unimaginable catastrophe. The issues we are dealing with are not the most complex that the EB has come across but definitely some of the most urgent. Don’t worry – we will certainly make this debating experience fun for you because only then will it be useful and, not to mention, fun for us.

With a combined Executive board experience of over 50 MUNs, you are sure to witness high quality debate. I would highly encourage delegates to use research to understand the agenda thoroughly and use research as a platform for arguments and creativity to come up with out-of-the-box solutions.

Welcome to the DISEC!

Dear Delegates,

I am beyond excited to welcome you to what I assure is going to be to a particularly important and dynamic committee in an extraordinary conference.

I am an undergraduate at King’s College, London, where I study an Honours course in International Relations. I have been a part of Mumbai Model UN circuit for a considerable part of my high school career, and have participated as a delegate, a chairperson, and a member of the organising committee.

MUN aside, I am a passionate musician and vocalist, a musical theatre lover and a serial abstract thinker. I love discussing meta-ideas and engaging with the ontology of the arts, whatever kind it may be.

All of these things together shape my approach towards a committee that I chair – I am creative in my means to get the best out of every delegate, both in speaking and non-speaking roles. I am especially keen on well researched arguments and persuasive speech. However, I tend to keep my biases aside – as an artist I have learned about the value of perspectives – so I will lead and judge this committee not based on who you are but what points you bring to the table and how cogent you can be.

We will together try our best to bring to life our vision for DISEC, which is a negotiation-focused approach for the cause of humanity. Given the scope of our agendas, we will ensure space for creative thought and persuasive expression as well. We want to make this an enjoyable experience for all parties involved, and ask that you bring your best foot forward.
